22Q

By Will Selph

When I first saw you,
You were new to the world.
There was no crying,
While the doctors placed the CPAP on you.
Though you were in danger,
Apathy was on your face.

A week later,
They took you into the surgeon’s room.
An hour later,
I could have sworn they killed you.
As the machines kept your lifeless body alive.

Time has passed since then,
Five months to be exact.
As your mom lets you sleep on her chest,
There is a part of me that notices,
That you look like the same boy I met.
Lifeless and unaware.
But something is different.
While you sleep,
You look alive and full of joy.
As your future is laid before you.
