CUT TO:
Fin hangs up a picture of all of them covered in paint and celebrating.
KYLER
Best night of our lives?
FIN
Yeah, well pretty damn close.
They sip soda and stare out the window.
KYLER
(Laughs)
This isn’t as strong as what I’m used to, but it’ll have to do.
FIN
Proud of you buddy…Hey Kye?
KYLER
Yeah?
FIN
What do you believe in?
Silence.
KYLER
I believe in us, I think that’s enough… Why? What’s up?
FIN
I was just thinking… Dad was raised Catholic, I kind of always felt like he expected me to be. It kind of explains the whole blindly following a book thing.
They give a light laugh.
FIN (CONT’D)
There’s this story in Genesis, Adam and Eve were told to repopulate the earth and in doing so they had two sons, Cain and Abel, the world’s first brothers.
KYLER
The worlds first bros, Imagine how close they were.
FIN
Exactly, all they had were each other, imagine how close they were, the bible says that Cain was supposed to be Abel’s keeper, to watch over him and keep him safe.
They exchange a look.
FIN (CONT’D)
Cain killed Abel because he was jealous of him. The world’s first brothers.
KYLER
Damn. That’s messed up.
Fin nods, staring at his soda can, turning it in his hands.
FIN
Yeah, makes you think. If the first two brothers in history couldn’t get it right, what chance did we have?
KYLER
(Quietly)
But we did.
FIN
(Glances at him)
Yeah?
KYLER
We’re still here, aren’t we?
FIN
Yeah, I guess we are.
They sip their drinks. A comfortable silence sets between them.
KYLER
I’m glad we aren’t Cain and Abel.
FIN
Yeah, me too.
We see the torn bro code book sitting between them.
KYLER
What are you doing Fin?
FIN
What do you mean? I’m just hanging out with my best friend.
KYLER
Have you talked to her yet?
FIN
I’m getting there.
KYLER
Bro, I gave you the green light, you’re good, go get her.
Silence.
FIN
You’re right. I’m gonna do it.
Fin grabs his things and starts to leave.
KYLER
Fin wait!
FIN
Yeah?
KYLER
You get Cali, I get the next one.
FIN
(Laughs)
Deal, but if this goes right there won’t be a next one.
Fin leaves.
KYLER
(To himself)
I hope you’re right buddy.
Fin checks his phone.
CALI
(texts)
meet at 12? I get off my break in 20, what did you need to talk to me about?
FIN
(texts)
you’ll just have to wait and find out.
Fin smiles, and starts to walk.
FIN (CONT’D)
(To himself)
Shit I’m gonna be early
He looks at his car, hesitates, then pockets his keys.
FIN (CONT’D)
Might as well walk.
With a deep breath, he starts down the sidewalk, hands in his pockets, heart steady. Today, he’s going after what he wants.
CUT TO:
EXT. ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE COFFEE SHOP
Fin sees Cali wiping down a table and walks toward her, not looking both ways.
FIN
(Shouts)
Caliope!
Cali looks up, having not heard that name in so long.
She sees Fin and smiles knowingly, finally having confirmation that he was the boy from the party. She stands up and begins to walk toward him.
Suddenly Fin is struck by a car.
CALIOPE
(Yells)
Someone call 911!
Caliope runs up to Fin and holds him.
He sees her holding him as everything fades.
